Dr Mutter Marvels A True Tale of Intrigue and Innovation at the Dawn of Modern Medicine Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz 9781592408702 Books

Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz’s book, Dr. Mütter’s Marvels, examines the life, work, and legacy of Dr. Thomas Mütter. Aptowicz juxtaposes Mütter’s story against the growth of both the medical profession and the city of Philadelphia in the nineteenth century, presenting the adversarial relationship of Mütter and Dr. Charles Meigs as a case study of the conflict between the old methodology of medicine and the new. Mütter devoted his life to using surgery as a tool to offer hope to those without it, advancing new techniques, including advanced surgeries, the use aseptic environments and clean tools, anesthetization, and patient care. The book is brilliantly researched, drawing upon a wealth of primary sources, including Mütter’s own writings, those of his contemporaries and peers, and medical and civic records from around the nineteenth century Atlantic world. Aptowicz’s writing closely resembles the informative-yet-readable styles of Erik Larson and Dava Sobel. Her book follows a narrative structure, with the occasional editorial detour for the reader’s further elucidation. The source notes offer a helpful guide to those who wish to pursue further reading and the book is certain to delight and inform those interested in the history of medicine and pre-Civil War nineteenth century America.

Dr Mutter Marvels A True Tale of Intrigue and Innovation at the Dawn of Modern Medicine Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz 9781592408702 Books Reviews

This book highlights the brilliance and innovative thinking of a late 19th/early 20th century American physician, Dr. Thomas Mutter. It also describes a transformative period in early modern medicine that is seldom is referenced in popular literature. Although the title and cover suggest more of a carnival theme, and there is a bit of that element in the book, Dr. Mutter's Marvels is a serious, eminently readable, and fascinating study of existing medical concepts and practices, and of the often lonely struggles of one man to bring solid science into the equation. Dr. Mutter was without doubt, a man very much ahead of his time, inventing or advocating medical procedures such as ether anesthesia, surgical instrument sterilization, the use of monitored post surgical recovery rooms, and much, much more. Regrettably, his brilliance came at the price of chronic illness and an early death. Who knows how much more he could have done given a normal lifetime. Even though he was but briefly on this earth, we have a lot to thank Dr. Mutter for. We should also thank the author for shining a well written light on this very special man.
My son just LOVES this book! It's his favorite book. He is growing up to be a doctor. I have taken him to see the museum 3 times already! It's kinda convenient since we live outside of Philadelphia, which is where the Mutter's Museum is. I believe this book is a great read for everyone. Pre-teen and up. You won't believe some of the incredible marvels of human life that has happened, and we haven't been aware of such things. But, they are on display at the Mutter's Museum. And, you can read all about it, in this book! I highly recommend this purchase! I hope my review has helped someone out there. Please let me know by clicking it helped. I like to track my responses. Thank you!
Blessings!
I wanted to love this book. Parts of it I enjoyed very, very much. But . . . there are flaws, as I see it. First, the dramatic pause between chapters is overly used, and many of the "reveals" following those cliffhangers just don't live up to the tension.

I was fascinated by Mutter, and yet I felt like it was only at the end of the book that, as a reader, I knew anything about what motivated him. Further, the Mutter museum is stated at the end of the book to be the culmination of Mutter's work, and yet the space devoted to it in this book is pretty small. There's no real description of Mutter's collection; we're left to wonder what it was Mutter collected. And when he did all this collecting - the book covers his career but doesn't address when or how he started the collection, or how he built it.

This book is brimming with wonderful details of the time and the place, with details of life's ailments back then and the (sometimes crazy) treatments available. But the space between those details is often white noise, for me, and the result is that I finished the book missing the sense of having read a cohesive story.
First things first, this book is about the career of Dr. Thomas Dent Mutter. Despite the cover art and the title, this is not a book about the Mutter medical museum. Dr. Mutter was a pioneer in the field of surgery around 1840. He was one of the first doctors to use anesthesia and to realize that cleanliness prevents infections. He was also one of the first doctors to do cosmetic surgery, but we are not talking nose jobs and facelifts. We are talking about people who were horribly disfigured, often due to burns. Think about this; in the 1800s women cooked in open fireplaces and wore long, voluminous skirts. Not a good combination. Add that they were pinned into these full skirted dresses and wearing corsets that impeded their movements. They went up like tents, and suffered terrible burns that made their life miserable. Dr. Mutter also invented the recovery room and was the first to keep patients in a hospital after surgery. This book is a must read for anybody who is interested in medical history. For those of us from Philadelphia, there is a lot of fascinating information about 19th century medicine in Philadelphia and the founding of Jefferson University, and their rivalry with Penn's medical school. If you are not from Philadelphia, don't worry, the local history won't be boring.
