Red Zone

Summary:

The only thing Rebecca Carson ever wanted to do was join the FBI. Now, that was in danger because of a situation, of which she’d had little control. So when her ex-partner and mentor, Travis Hansen, calls and offers her an opportunity to help him with a job, she jumps at the chance.

Gage Daniels has made a pretty good life for himself. As a professional football player, all he has to do is ask, and most things are made available to him. This includes women. A well timed smile is usually all it takes to attract the opposite sex, especially in Nashville.

When a stalker threatens Gage, the team owner calls an old friend to help protect his star quarterback. Rebecca must work to protect Gage while staving off his advances. The last thing she wants is to be another notch on a hot shot athlete’s belt.

Review:

This was one of the funniest books I’ve read in a while. It made me laugh and cry. The flow was seamless, the characters were believable. It kept me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out who the stalker was. I didn’t run into any annoying errors. You can tell the author had fun writing this story, because of the way she captured each and every emotion. What more can I say other than this is a must read. Yes its part of a series, but each book can also be read as a standalone. Once I started I couldn’t put it down.

Being my first book from this author in this series, I will tell anyone who reads this review this....

I liked the mix between a sports themed romance and a slight suspense story. Not a lot of humor that had me laughing out loud, nor is there really any tear-jerking sob story here. The suspense was light, but not a feverish page-turning fiasco that had me biting my nails. It was light on the sizzle, but heavy on character thought. I can only guess it is that certain level of consideration of feelings that had me enjoying this light read.

While I enjoyed the Gage's perspective, I had a hard time embracing Rebecca's reasoning for being so detached for most of the book. I understand that she was career-driven and being an FBI agent that also happens to be female will bring on some sense of a tough outer shell, but there was very light mention of her journey to letting her guard down and that is what made me not like the heroine in this book all that much.

With this story being semi-focused on a professional sport (football), I felt that there was very light mention of the sport other than it existed. The focus was a little more focused on protecting an alpha athlete from potential danger, but the buildup to finding the threat was not as focused as it probably should have. Nope, this story was more focused on breaking barriers and turning a lie into the truth.

Not to be an editing Nazi... there were a few spots that were missed and a few phrases needed my change in how it was read to be better with the flow of the story. Nothing too serious or annoying, but they were there. I did not take away rating points for that. What did manage to lose a star and made this book likable instead of lovable in my eyes was what I call... "the fluff factor". There was an attempt at a secondary story from a couple of different angles that did nothing for the flow of the story as well as the lack of that something more to pull (in my eyes) the reader into really feeling anything strongly. As I said earlier... a decent light read. Beyond some brief character descriptions... I did not see where the attraction was with these two. Okay, they were mentioned as being both attractive, but not much else. Even their actions were lightly mentioned, thus not engaging enough to feel strongly anything for either character. I will say that there were a couple of parts where there was potential, but it lacked the oomph I was hoping for.

In closing.... it was a decent, light read, with enough of a story to finish the book, but lacking the "more" I was hoping for. Maybe my expectations were a little high, but I would suggest it to a friend to check it out.
Just finished reading Red Zone, what can I say. It is one of the few books that make you sad to think it is ending but then you can't help yourself from trying to read it faster to see how it ends. Gage has got to be as close to perfect as any man can be. He is confident, sexy, compassionate, patient and a pro football player. He captures your heart from the beginning with his determination that he doesn't need to be protected by an FBI agent, then you see him with his family and you just melt, yes I used the word melt a lot in describing this book to friends. Then to see him go after what he wants but in a loving, confident respectful way, well melt comes to mind again. He knows he wants Rebecca, but he also knows that it is going to be a huge wall to climb over to get to her heart. He is the kind of man who watches the woman's expressions and can read her soul through eyes, he hears her and he feels her, all he has to do is make Rebecca comfortable enough to admit she loves him to.

Rebecca, the FBI agent who is taking a break from her job as an agent due to a job that "went bad", she was bored out of her mind at home. When her former partner calls and offers her a chance to protect a pro football player from a stalker that has been sending him messages she jumps at the chance to be working again. Little did she know that Gage, the player, found her more than interesting from the moment he saw her. She comes from a childhood that leads her to be shut off from the world, which fits great with her job. She is expected to have the mask to protect her emotions along with the professional clothing that doesn't enhance that she is attractive. Being in the mother role to her little sister also enhances her protective nature, forcing her to be even more cautious of people. Her main role in her FBI job was to find missing children, a job she could complete, feel good about and move on with no emotional ties. Her sister on the other hand, is a free spirit, risk taker who is willing to give her heart to men and love fully, only to end up being a pile of broken pieces when the man is done with her. Rebecca hated seeing her sister hurt, and while jealous of her sisters ability to take risk in the love department, she is also more determined to never follow that path and allow her heart to be crumbled by a man.

Not going to give away any more of the book, but let's just say that this game of emotional tug of war between Rebecca and Gage drew me in quickly and never let go. It was one of those books that once you are done, it is difficult to find a new book to read because you just can't seem to let go of Gage and how perfect he is. Highly recommend this book if you love romance, thrill and emotional tug of war.
