Dahl definitely delivers on this one. This isn't my favorite Dahl book, but it's a very, very good romance. (I prefer her contemporaries since I think she has a more modern voice.)

ONE WEEK AS LOVERS opens with the hero, Viscount Nicholas Lancaster, discovering his fiance in the arms of another man. He knows that he can't break off the engagement because she is a heiress, and his family is drowning in debt. When the news comes that Cynthia Merrithrope, Nick's old neighbor, had died, Nick decides to take a break from the London life and return to his roots. When he discovers that Cynthia isn't exactly dead, but fleeing an unwanted suitor. As they devise a way for Cynthia to escape her fate, Nick hides a hell of a secret from her as they fall into lust and love.

Cynthia is a great heroine. She's willful, flawed, and active. Nick, however, makes the story. Everyone knows him as a cheerful, but debt-ridden Viscount Lancaster. Nobody knows what dark secrets lay under the amiable exterior, until Cynthia gets a bit too close. Most readers will be thoroughly charmed by Lancaster's wit and thoughtfulness, and sympathetic to his darker side. Usually, I find tortured heroes overwrought and melodramatic, but Dahl does a good job with Nick. He's definitely tortured, but it doesn't take over the story.

The sec scenes are pretty typical for Dahl--graphic, steamy, and the guys know what to do with a woman. That being said, I felt like there was less variety here than in most of her books (mostly due to some of Nick's hangups). I found myself missing her usual diversity in well ... positions. (C'mon ... the sex is a big part of why we read these books.)

Otherwise, the plot is fairly exciting with lots of devices, but it could get a bit messy at times. The ending is bit drawn out and somewhat unsatisfying. The characters were engaging, even though I wanted desperately for Nick to tell Cyn his secret. The prose is fairly good, but I've seen Dahl do even better.

Recommended to anyone who likes historicals, strong heroines and tortured heroes.

Her words are powerful and passionate, her character protrayals are real and down to earth.
I love the twists and turns in the actions of her characters.
LOVE Victoria Dahl and this is another fabulous read. She always has a great plot line and wonderful character development. By the end of the book, you feel as if you know the characters. This book has all the excitement and steaminess we've come to expect from Ms. Dahl. Highly recommended read.
I just wanted to point out a couple of things based on the previous reviews. First, I have read Ms. Dahl's previous books and by far, A Rake's Guide to Pleasure is my favorite but reading about Lancaster was not a dull read. I do agree that Lancaster's character has much more depth than Cynthia's and that the NY ending seemed a bit out of place. However, I didn't think Lancaster's arrangement with Hart went out of character. Because of his background, I didn't really see Lancaster as a true aristocrat and I think he had some disdain for his position. Even in ARGTP he commented on Emma at least working for her money vs. marrying for it. Also, Lancaster was not friends with Hart. Only because of his friendship with Emma did Hart ask for Lancaster's help. Lancaster was calling on this favor when he went to Hart's estate with Cynthia. I would have considered it more out of character for Lancaster to ask for financial assistance and then for Hart to even consider it. Hart thought of Lancaster as a shallow gold digger who was using his charms to find himself an heiress. Overall, I enjoyed this book and thought Lancaster's tortured past made for quite a surprise. I wouldn't have expected such a topic in a historical romance novel and in the end it made Lancaster a much more embraceable hero.
Terrific story with real characters that actually have good chemistry. Lots of emotional depth.
Victoria Dahl is now my favorite author! Loved this book! Steamy romance, mystery and intrigue all make for a heady combination. Once started, I couldn't stop reading until the end.
I do enjoy most any romantic tale; that being said, this seemed just a bit "done too often" - but was good, nevertheless.

Two former friends, now meeting again in strange circumstances, fall in love but can't marry because of family finances; they'd each have to marry into money. Nicholas Lancaster and Cynthia Merrithorpe both had reason to hate Lord Richmond, but there was a real mystery surrounding Nick's early years and he wouldn't speak of it. When he finally told her his terrible story, Cynthia wasn't sure if he'd live to love her again.
This is the third book in the series that begins with To Tempt A Scotsman. I don't read many stories with strong sexual content. I am glad I stumbled on this series. I really liked the characters for all their explicitly displayed sexual encounters. If you don't mind the more graphic encounters between the characters, I think you would enjoy the series.
