Brilliant, Complex, Thriller - Read Twice Back to BackI recollect my professor in English Literature praising American short story writers. She asserted that, unlike novelists, writers of the USA excelled the Europeans because they wasted not a single word. I didn’t quibble with her, for she was a French immigrant and seemed to be far more wedded to the craft of reading and reviewing than I shall ever be.
In “Ninth and Nowhere” we have three or four stories intertwined into what feels almost as deep as a full-length novel. The first time I ‘read it,’ I actually listened to the free Audible edition using my Alexa Dot, while I assembled a new exercise bike I got through Amazon Vine. By the end of the story, I found myself a bit confused about who did what.
So, I stopped assembling, and read the book while also listening to the outstanding Audible narrator. Very rare that I actually read again after listening, but it was worth every second spent immersed in this thriller.
BLUSH FACTOR: As another reviewer indicated, this is not a work to read aloud to youngsters or your prayer group. Your elder may or may not care for the frequent eff-words. As for me, well, a few such profanities goes a long way, artistically, to set the tone. Still, I was so glued to every word that I was able to dismiss the excesses.
WRITING & EDITING: Professionally written and edited.
STAND-ALONE OR CLIFFHANGER ENDING: This is a stand-alone thriller.
PLOT OR CHARACTER: Complex intertwined plots but with surprisingly terrific character development.
BOTTOM LINE
One of the most terrific short stories I’ve read in many years.
Despite the profanities, I’m rating this at five stars out of five.

Ninth and Nowhere edition by Jeffery Deaver Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This is the story about an assortment of characters who end up on the same corner in the city. Each person is given some background information that explains how they are involved in a crime scene. I have given this short story four stars because I read this over a couple of days. Big mistake. I should have taken the ninety minutes and read it all at once, so I could keep the characters straight.
This is a fast moving story. Many very different people from completely different backgrounds were immerging on one particular place in a large American city.
What happens next changes some lives forever.
This is one of my favorite authors. I was disappointed that this book contained too many swear words and events that are not interesting just unpleasant.
Wanted to sample Deaver's writing. This short story was a good start. It reflects an author who knows a lot about being human. It shows how a situation can seem like one thing on the surface but is really something else if you look deeper. And it shows how any of us do not know where we'll be at the end of a day or how fragile the next few hours could be or who could change our fortunes, either way, by merely intersecting with us. It shows most people are basically good people regardless of their zipcode. And how he did that in one short story I do not know. The writing is tight. The story is deftly weaved. I think I like Deaver.
Excellent example of how good storytelling doesn't need hundreds of pages to be suspenseful and thrilling. Short, concise, very well-written story of how seven lives converge on gray March morning in the "Nowhere" district of New York City near Riverside. Clever twists make the story unfold in a surprising way. Very entertaining and enjoyable!
“Ninth And Nowhere”
A short story
Jeffrey Deaver
I have had the pleasure and privilege to read many short stories by Mr. Deaver. I do so because I cannot help myself. All of them are so clever it is humbling. I like to imagine that Mr. Deaver writes them because he, too, cannot help himself. Whenever I finish one of his short stories, it always seems to me that he has what may seem to be a random assortment of ideas that he tosses into the air and like jig saw puzzle pieces they all fall down onto the table into a finished cohesion of a planned story.
“Ninth And Nowhere” provided me with an entertaining reminiscence of that awe. It takes the concept of ‘x degrees of separation’ and then throws in some Hitchcockian betrayals and a little ‘pay it forward’ and an uneventful morning for a dozen almost unrelated people turns into a connected ending, of sorts.
Even though one knows a twist is coming, that knowledge is not enough to accurately predict it.
I admit that I was sucked into an assumption for which I found to be embarrassing as I imagine will happen to all who read it.
Read it. It’s a very good half hour.
Al Dell
If Jeffery Deaver wrote it, I want to read it. Yes, even if it's a short story - probably my least favorite form of literature (save poetry by Emily Dickinson, but that's a story for another day). It took me less than an hour from start to finish - partly because it's just 52 pages and mostly because it's totally engrossing.
The length makes it difficult to review; there's little that can be said without giving away too much. Basically, as the official description says, it's the story of seven people from very different walks of life who are "connected" in different ways - among them a near-retirement cop, a dealer of illegal firearms and a former Special Forces veteran now living on the street. That they were to meet up seemed destined from the beginning, but exactly how is threaded throughout the story but isn't fully revealed until the very end.
What happens and how it all shakes out is interesting, but what struck me the most is how willingly I bought into stereotyped perceptions of the characters. Oopsie! Bottom line? Good story. Read it.
