So this book starts off okay, girl running away from her life (casually mentions that she was raped and doesn't go into it/discuss is ever again) to join as a volunteer in the peace corps. Then things just get weird and the book turns into a fantasy/sci-fi story. It just turned absurd and ludicrous at points. Honestly I could boot being myself to finish reading after 45 pages and just skimmed the rest. Gave it the old college try.

Bridges is a great read for anybody who has experienced the wonders, frustrations and adventures of living in a foreign culture. As someone who has lived in 3 countries and counting, I could identify very much with the heroine Jessie. On her journey of the heart, you'll see her evolving from a need to reflect on her experiences and her almost desperateness to understand the foreign world around her, to letting go of her existing believe system and getting caught up in a world of even greater wonders.

My only complaint It was too short and I wanted to read more of what happens next... when is the sequel coming out ;-)
This beautiful book guides you through a journey of reconnection to our deep roots, our true self and our common life. It is a search through different continents, different people, different experiences, all interrelated with the discovery of something deep, something that we miss in a distracted daily life the true love to ourselves and our fellow human beings. It remembered me many moments of my personal journey as a peace volunteer in a spiritual search around the planet. It is written with a light touch, relaxing and empowering at the same time, and it is a changing perspective book. You cannot see the things around you in the same way after this reading. It is a book of meaning. It is a book of trust. Thumbs up to the author!

W.S. WIlliamson's "Bridges" is a compelling tale of a woman on a quest to find herself and the meaning of love in a literal and metaphysical journey spanning continents. Williamson skillfully develops the character of Jessie, the book's protagonist. We get inside of Jessie's head and heart in a very intimate way due to Williamson's cinematic writing and descriptive detail. We hope with Jessie, we suffer with her and we struggle with her. We long for her to make the right decisions and to heal her wounds from the past and to recognize the dangers before her. It is striking the way this character elicits such intense empathy. A subplot dealing with alchemical issues piques interest and keeps the pages turning.

This book has wide appeal and is a pleasure to digest. I hope that WIlliamson will continue to share Jessie's journeys of self discovery with us.
"Bridges" is a magical, compelling, and mysterious adventure. Jessie, the main character, strives to live life to the fullest when she seizes the opportunity to join the Peace Corps. Once in Africa, she is thrust into a life changing journey that will captivate your mind and heart. Like many young women, Jessie was hurt by love in her past, but her courage and determination gives strength to her character. Numerous strange occurrences and her dreams will keep you wondering and spellbound to the end. Although the author delves into philosophy, religion, and science, it is an easy read that unveils the deep longings of the heart. Bridges is saturated in antiquity and thought provoking. W.S. Williamson offers the reader adventure, inspiration, and revelation which dissipates many of the fears to live, love, and believe. Well worth the read. SjB
Wendy Williamson has really outdone herself with this one! In this entrancing story about a Peace Corpse volunteer, Jessie, Williamson draws you in from the first page. A story of life, love, learning, and spiritual growth that compelled me to consider my own life and choices and the effects of those choices. This book was a quick read in that you can't put it down! Each chapter leaves you wondering what the next will hold. I truly look forward to more novels by W.S. Williamson! Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

White woman of privilege has abusive encounters (including casual rape?) at the hands of brown people as she "selflessly" lives out the white mans burden... all the while "discovering" herself through dysfunctional sex, and even more dysfunctional Western Gazed "participation" in indigenous ritual. She is "saved" through a rich, white, French man who lies to her and (**SPOILER ALERT**) is really a demon.

I have to say, for someone who works in the field of international education to write such an offensive novel with such reductionist, stereotypical, and Othering attitudes towards foreigners shocked me. As a former Peace Corps volunteer, I am bothered by the casual use of this as a part of the plot. Please, do not spend a penny on this book or support the delusion that this is transcendent literature or nouveau-magic-realism. The indigenous characters in the novel are either one-dimensional, oppressive to this white woman, dangerous, unintelligent, or simple.
